Noobs – Know Before You Go
It is recommended to plan ahead for Carnival and start looking for lodging, flights, and rental cars at least six months in advance. We started our search in August 2023 for Carnival 2024.
Must Attend Trinidad Carnival Events for Noobs

- Attend the Dimanche Gras event, a grand talent showcase including calypso, soca, and the King and Queen of Carnival competitions.
- Carnival Monday and Tuesday:
- Immerse yourself in the street parties, masquerade bands, and vibrant celebrations on Carnival Monday and Tuesday.
- Cooler Fete Parties:
- Attend one of the popular Cooler Fete parties where attendees bring their beverages in coolers.
Travel Tips for Newbies
Before you plan to fly, check whether you require a Visa to enter Trinidad. If you travel from the USA, Canada or the UK, you do not need a visa to enter. It is recommended to book your flights at least six months in advance to get the best price and fly into Piarco International Airport (POS). During Carnival season, many major airlines have daily flights into POS. Upon arrival at the airport, please hail a registered taxi with drivers wearing white shirts. The average fare from the airport to the capital city of Port-of-Spain is USD 35.
Lodging for Noobs
Hotels begin accepting waitlist reservations for Carnival as early as May of the previous year. Call the hotel and give them your contact information for the waitlist. Once the hotel’s carnival rates are finalized, they will contact you to make a full deposit for your stay. Usually, the last chance to cancel your reservation with a full refund is in November, before Carnival. During Carnival, hotel rates are typically doubled. However, you can reduce your lodging costs by sharing the lodging with a travel companion, searching for a local AirBnB, or rooming with friends or relatives on the island. Many international hotel chains like Marriott, Hilton, and Hyatt are on the island. Additionally, there are local properties that are clean, safe and affordable.
