A Tubman-Inspired Photographic Odyssey Through the Pandemic

A New Passion: My First Digital Camera Amidst COVID-19

Estimated reading time: 4 minutes

Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, I delved into photography, acquiring my first digital camera. Unbeknownst to me, this choice initiated a profound journey of self-discovery. Although a novice in 2020, I’ve dedicated the subsequent years to refining my skills, tackling challenges, and transforming into a passionate photographer.

The limitations imposed by the pandemic, particularly the restricted human movement, created an unexpected learning opportunity. The scarcity of crowds and leisurely drive times opened up vast, unexplored landscapesβ€”ideal conditions for a budding photographer.

DC, Maryland, and Virginia Chronicles: Shooting Landmarks, Murals

Exploring the DMV – DC, Maryland, and Virginia – I focused my camera towards the landmarks, murals, and buildings that epitomize the character of the DMV. Through my photographs, I created a visual diary that captures the distinctive stories woven into the fabric of each location.

Harriet Tubman’s Legacy: A Photographic Masterpiece in Cambridge

One of the most memorable moments of my journey was capturing the iconic Harriet Tubman mural in Cambridge, Maryland. The mural, painted by the talented Michael Rosato, is a testament to Tubman’s legacy and is a brilliant work of art that inspires us all.

The exact date of Harriet Tubman’s birth is unknown, but historians generally agree that she was born Araminta Ross in 1822 to Benjamin and Harriet (Rit) Greene Ross, taking on her mother’s first name when she married in 1844. She was born in nearby Peters Neck, on a farm owned by Anthony Thompson, a medical doctor and timber magnate, and was later moved to Bucktown.

In May 2020, I felt proud to share my favourite photo of the Harriet Tubman mural on Unsplash. The response was overwhelming, as the image resonated globally and received an impressive seven thousand downloads.

Rediscovering Roots: Harriet Tubman Railroad

In 2023, I went on a photography expedition back to Dorchester County, Maryland. I visited the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Museum during my trip, which was a significant experience. I also stumbled upon the Bordess farm, where Tubman spent her childhood, which added a personal touch to my ongoing narrative.
